Long before it was cool to be green, students from Sacred Heart High School in Kingston were doing their part for the environment. The tradition began in 1989 when two students formed Globally Responsible Environmentally Aware Network, or GLEAN GREAN. And it continued this weekend as about 60 students gave up their Saturday to clean the shoreline of Long Beach in Plymouth.
Cigarette butts, plastic straws and lids were among the most common items found on the beach. Its kind of sad to all these bad habits that people have its not a good sign, said eighth-grader Stephanie Bryson of Plymouth. The Sacred Heart effort was part of Coastsweep, an annual statewide coastal pickup sponsored by the state Office of Coastal Zone Management. People shouldnt litter so much on the beach, said eighth-grader Angela Hanley of Plymouth. Volunteers on the beach Saturday included students in grades 7 to 11 plus some parents and school staff. Its a great way to relate to each other and do some community service, said Sister Ida Mary, a chemistry teacher and GREANs faculty adviser.
