They were testing the run for new weekend service to Niagara Falls to
Union Station starting June 27 ! :)

When you go over the old right of way on Broadway ave if you look southwest ; that's where the NYC trackpan's were located so that the steamloco's could draw water on the fly. until the early 1970's NYC would come through here from Detroit cross the canal then split at southworth st to Niagara Fall's or to Ft Erie along side CN at Brookfield. now CP ft erie sub.
-
To the west of the prince charles overpass there was a diamond for the Ns&t trolley's that crossed over the NYC mainline and the eastern end of TH&B Coyle yard which extended to river road by the kingsway bowling alley and across the welland river to Fenwick. If you go into the field just west of river rd you can see the old concrete octogon switchman's shanty about 100' in. This was the TH&B's yard before the one built by Lambert rd now CP.

There's been a total of 5 GO engines in southern yard in Welland . They are having some minor repair's done at the old Welland tube's plant.

weird, of course, there was a time when Welland was the rail hub of Ontario (Thus our city motto "Where water and rails meet" ), sadly, the trains barely come through now and the ships no longer come downtown....how I miss that!

oh yah no i wouldent vandalize them either, i woulda just gone up and if the door was open id take a peek inside haha but i wouldent break in if it where locked.
Back in the day ,the stretch between the Welland river at Broadway ave & river rd across the old canal bridge , over the CN diamonds to southworth st was referred to as the Golden mile because of the amount of trains and the variety NYC, TH&B, WABASH, N&W PM, CN, & Ns&t. Later on when the new canal was dug with the tunnel PC ( conrail) Chessie (CSX) TH&B (CP) and CN were diverted thru here on all new rail paid for by the Canadian Government..

Cool. Thanks for the history. It's appreciated. I'm always trying to put the pieces together of what it was like back in the 70's and early 80's and this helps alot.

yah dood, thats totally awsome what are the odds eh? When I saw the vid you guys took of it on the Grimsby Sub, I was like "what the hell? thats awsome!". apparently there's another one in Welland according to railfancody, I'm off on Sunday. I'm gonna go hunt for it see if it's sitting on a storage track/siding somewhere.
