The War On Iraq: The US Assault (2)

The war against the sovereign nation of Iraq began on March 20, 2003, when George W. Bush, without a legal Declaration of War, preemptively invaded that country.

This was done in spite of the fact that Iraq had never attacked the United States or any American citizen, nor even threatened to attack the United States.

There was no link between the regime of Saddam Hussein and terrorist attacks against the United States or any other country.

There was no evidence to support the claims that Hussein had chemical, biological, radiological, or nuclear weapons, or that he was seeking these weapons, and in spite of the fact that all inspections of Iraqi facilities showed no signs of these weapons. In fact, the only time Hussein was ever known to have these weapons was during the 1980s when the United States sold them to him.

Furthermore, there was absolutely no logic to the idea that if he did have these that he would or could try to use them against the US.

Iraq was a pathetic, impoverished third world nation, with no navy, no air force, no WMDs, and an army that was 1/5 the size of the one that US smashed to pieces a decade earlier. Iraq was a mess. The US had bombed it throughout the 1990s for violating the "no-fly zones," and the economic sanctions against it killed hundreds of thousands of innocent people and did nothing to remove their dictator. The war was unbelievably one-sided. If Iraq was such a threat, why did it only take a month to conquer the entire country?

In the end, what the United States did was nothing more than a vast criminal act of a giant, insecure, belligerent, bullying superpower. With more than a million Iraqis dead and millions more fleeing the country, who can argue that it was "worth it" to them?

If the Sunni minority in Iraq had not stood up to the insurgency, and bit the bullet (literally) of being occupied by the US, and said "enough," the country would still be in chaos. And who knows how long this relative calm will last? Get out now!
