Whales off Pt Vicente Palos Verdes 8-26-10

Yesterday my lifelong PV neighbor and buddy called with exhilaration "are you out on your deck? its going off out there!" and I witnessed more than 30 whales that afternoon. It was Thursday, 8-26-10 at about 5 in the afternoon when I first noticed the groups of four whales are various spots in the Santa Catalina channel and just a few hundred feet from the cliff at Pt. Vicente. My friend and I stopped by a few of the turn outs along Palos Verdes Dr near Terranea to watch these massive marvelous creatures journey by. It seemed like they would take two or three breaths and then dive for over a minute. And they were moving north at maybe 4 knots, and there were a bunch of them.
There was a lady from the Palos Verdes Whale Association that told us that there were over 33 sighted before 5pm, and many of the whales were Blue of Fin whales. She also told us that the whale would roll over to swoop krill to the surface and feed.
The video I shot is kinda long, but there was soo much fantastic footage. At the end is a huge whale that was very close to Nelson's at Terranea, I bet they got quite a show. I have a group of friends from high school that get together to jam every week called hungbuny. This is our interpretation of "They Love Each Other" written by Jerry Garcia. Recorded at the Sea Palace Studio live without rehearsal and inspired by the majestic sea, fish taco dinner, and some lovely moments and smiles in the studio.
