VLF Whistlers.
What you are hearing are sounds that are made naturally, the whistler sounds are basically lightning that gets trapped in the magnetic field lines of the Earth, of which then gets zipped around these lines in space causing the whistle type sounds, the frequency range is 0-20 KHz
The audio you're listening to is what i captured in the early hours of the 7th of May 2010 at my home location Grenoside, Sheffield UK, the whistlers went on for over 6 hours.
I edited out the best whistlers and made it into a file to post here on youtube, hope you find it interesting.

  • I seriously doubt it's lightning. That's just the common assumption. You really think an antenna's going to pick up all lightning, each in comparably equal strength? No chance! :)

  • @energytruth Hi thanks for viewing & commenting, the crackles you hear is lightning for sure, these vlf receivers have a very high input impedance which is why it picks up very far distant lightning, have a google for vlf, best regards :)

  • Congratulation !

  • @s52ab Thanks for viewing & commenting :)

  • Okay, so you can only pick these up on a radio?.. 'cos a friend and I heard something similar during a thunderstorm.. it was pretty weird, and loud! (can't remember if it was before or after the lightning and / or thunder.. :p ) I love thunderstorms, so I always keep my eyes and ears open to what's going on, but I've never heard anything like this before.

  • @MPaans Not on a radio, the frequency range is 0Hz - 20Khz, more so in the 0Hz - 16Khz range.

You just need to build a high impedance pre-amp followed by any amplification after that, take a look at my website where i have a schematic, my website link is on my channels page, thanks for viewing :)

Will be happy reading from you abt antenna.

  • Hey men Marky26UK i have also build several ELF receivers and made a lot of huge coils and you know what i found?

It isn't lightning at all, well some of it is but for the most part it is energy coming from radioactive decay that is picked up in and around the antenna / receiving coil.

You could think of it as background radiation becoming audible.

  • If you play Tom Sawyer by Rush, you'll hear a synth effect that sounds like these things. Pretty awesome.

  • @marky26uk Hehe.. tnx for the info, but I'm not planning on buidling one.. what I meant was: we heard a similar sound just with our plain old ears.. it was pretty weird!
