Fitzroy Lions Club Song

A special video dedicated to the old Fitzroy Lions Football Club from the Australian (Victorian) Football Football League

Fitzroy formed in the days of the VFA in 1883 and were one of the original 8 breakaway clubs to form the VFL in 1897

(the VFL would later became the AFL in 1990)

During their glory years Fitzroy won 8 premireships (Grand Finals) in 1898, 1899, 1904, 1905, 1913, 1916, 1922 and their last in 1944 during World War 2.

The club were known as the Gorilas, the Maroons and finally the Lions but sadly after 1944, Fitzroy were to never win another premireship and had limited success and finals during the 1950s to the 1990s when the club finally succumed to the financial pressures of the league and merged with the Brisbane Bears to form the Brisbane Lions in the end of the 1996 season.

The club as the Brisbane Lions has won 3 Premireships during the years 2001 to 2003 and the memory of the old Fitzroy Lions lives on in the Brisbane Lions club song...

"We will always fight for victory, like Fitzroy and Bears of old".

agree with the fact that in 2011 SO many teams are struggling and getting support the 'roys didnt get, lot more money from TV now too, and TV likes more games and more teams. Hawthorn almost merged and have about 60k members now you never know what could/happen.

@BBFFC09 Not entirely accurate, if Fitzroy hadn't have merged with Brisbane, it would have merged with North Melbourne, which is what Fitzroy preferred, it's what North preferred, and it's what the rest of the clubs preferred. Dyson Hore-Lacy took the proposal to the AFL, and because one club objected (being Collingwood), the AFL took the rug under everyone's feet and forced the merger with Brisbane.
