  • LOL I'm sorry to laugh but I had THE EXACT same noise on a '96 Taurus. The transmission was SHOT. The car had 96k miles and was very well cared for. I'm sorry to break it to you but your transmission is shot. Does it have a very delayed harsh shift from first to second? Mine did and it only got worse with time. This is THE problem that the Taurus/Sables have...a horrible transmission with a short lifespan. I was lucky mine even lasted 96k. They typically fail 60-70k miles.

  • Yes I have figured that the transmission is shot. My car has 130k. It does have a harsh shift from first to second. Do you know what the exact problem was? A shift solenoid? My car owes me nothing, so when the car dies ill just buy a new one. Maybe I should trade it in now and get at least 500 bucks Other then this problem I love the car. I got the car with 85k almost 3 years ago.

  • Tranny life depends upon how one maintains and drives the vehicle...

  • just like any other car, if you give it enough TLC, it can last virtually forever. 134k on my sable and the tranny only need to be flushed, other than that, runs like it has since day 1 (september 1995).

  • Wow Sable rules the survival from the tornado!!! Woo

  • well let me jus say I luv mi 96 sable, she really is one of the best running cars I've ever owned

  • Ive got a 96 sable and im coming up on 150k , I can feel the car shifting but, i dont think its a problem.

    No problems here

  • Since you bought yours with 85k, it's very possible knowing how the Taurus/Sable is that it was already on it's 2nd transmission. Wouldn't surprise me honestly. I've never had a transmission fail on other cars, with as much as 180k miles. The Taurus transmission makes me angry, they should last much longer.

  • PS, it'll cost about $2,500 for a replacement. These cars aren't worth the steel they're made from, which is shame. Nice cars.

  • Not really, the trans are what are POS's. The Taurus and the Sable are REALLY tough cars. I own one and I've abused the living hell out of it and she still runs like new. My friend lost 2 of his cars in the tornado, the one that survived was his Sable.
