The Bushman (Shas original)

Well...
A friendly critic helped me
sort out a couple of rough spots,
so I thought it might be worth another try.
I thought you might enjoy a bit
of added background action, too, so...

The Bushman

for the Bushman Ukulele Contest 2008

He was bent and gnarled and grizzled
He was old and wise and strong
The Bushman walked the trails alone
'Til the Kid drove out from town.

The Kid had vowed to learn the ways
Of Nature and all her Laws.
He was lookin' for a teacher
And the Bushman knew it all.

Now the Bushman was a loner,
Didn't need no company.
Sure didn't need no Kid to tag along
In the bush, where he was free.

But the Kid was plumb determined
And he wore the Bushman down
'Til the old man let him carry the load
When they headed up the mountain.

"What's the name of these blue flowers?"
"Where does the eagle nest?"
"What made this trail we're following?"
"What part of the beaver tastes best?"

Oh, the questions never stopped nor slowed,
The Bushman was gettin' mad.
He's nearly lost the Kid at the creek
And he was startin' to wish he had!

"What's the name of these brown berries?
And who stacked them up in a pile?"
The Bushman glanced down at the deer droppings
And grinned an evil smile...

"Why, Kid, them are 'smarten-up pills'!
Ain't you never seen them before?
Just chew a few as you walk the woods
And you'll learn a darned sight more!"

The Kid hesitated, but he wanted to learn
So he chewed on a couple of them berries.
He gagged and he spit! "These taste like shit!"
...He was smartenin' up already!

Oh, he's bent and gnarled and grizzled,

The Bushman walks the trail alone
Since the Kid went back to town!

Damn that view of the outhouse made me miss living up the New Mexico Rockies . Now I am stuck in England and have running water , but no Coyotes boooooooooo
