Stuck in a small town in NC during the 80's (I was 16 when this song was released) I had only MV3 and Friday Night Videos on my small black and white TV and Joel Denver's Future Hits on the radio for musical diversity. Everyone I knew was into AC/DC, southern rock, Eagles or Glam Metal. I couldn't get anyone interested in bands like Joy Division, Split Enz or Figures on a Beach. I thank you for the opportunity to remember the 16 year old kid I used to be.

No worries... I got a lot of 'only-famous-in-Australia' videos on my channels and so far, I've covered 23 years.

I know everyone will think i'm weird for saying this, but the Finn brothers *look* like Kiwis.
Awesome song and video by a great band. This and Hard Act To Follow are my faves from them.

lol, that's not weird at all. I know what you're saying! They've got a look that you just don't see in Aussies - Caucasian or otherwise. I notice it in the reality programs coming out of New Zealand as well. So many of the people featured in these shows remind me of many of the Kiwis I've worked with over the years... even Reg Mombassa and Pete O'Doherty of Mental As Anything (both being brothers from NZ) have a 'Kiwi' thing that is different to the other three members of the Mentals.

I don't know if you've just typed this by impulse and near-jerk-reaction, but whatever your intension, you are obviously ignorant about the meaning of the song - which is actually in reference to a relationship that the song's composer had gotten through. The 'white settlement' reference is used more as a metaphor - not a celebration of white invasion. If you really do fancy yourself as an intelligent man with a sense of morals, I'd expect you to look a little deeper instead of being pompus

Aoteoroa....Land of the long white cloud...what the Maori call New Zealand....this video is awesome, it offers a history lesson of sorts. The Maoris were the original settlers of New Zealand. The Finn brothers start the second verse of this song by singing "Aoteoroa...." and later the video shows a traditional Maori welcoming dance and the Finn bros are blazing through the pseudo ferns. Rather amazing gem from the early days of music videos.

the ending to this song is so sublime...very pretty and very melancholy....one of the prettiest I've ever heard.....and I've heard a lot!

i was thinking the exact same thing. How when i was young and I liked the video(no radio airplay in memphis TN) i did for very different meanings.
Love the line, "just lucky to stay afloat" and "there's a wind in my sails, to protect and provail"... i hope your sails have been filled with fresh winds and you are prevailing again

I am in my late teens and live in NC and it's basically the same thing for me. All the kids today are into bad rap and hip hop, awful country, or metal. I am into artists like Split Enz, XTC, Elvis Costello, Joe Jackson, Squeeze, Blur, and Talking Heads and I am extremely lucky if I meet someone my age who is into those artists like I am. Not saying all music today is terrible because there are a few great artists, but I wish I grew up in the 80's.

Shame on the British public, you can blame the BBC Thatcher or the Falklands but in truth you let the greatest single ever made sink without trace. This should have been massive - it's a work of genius.
