"It was more a feeling that, no matter how well-regulated world affairs are, disasters are always gonna happen. Now normally I stay away from those kind of big statements, cuz I feel uncomfortable making them, but in this case it just fell out...I'd been writing songs kind of about Michael Jackson. The verses were gonna list all these things that had gone wrong for him, and I was going to invent some and, in the same way 'Jordan' was about Elvis, write a song about Michael Jackson. But the release from it was going to be the chorus, 'Only the boogie music/Will never, ever let you down.' Then at the last minute my nerve failed. No matter how much I loaded up the verses with disturbing images, I just wasn't sure about the chorus." Paddy McAloon

  • One of my favourites, and therefore one of their best in my humble opinion. I particularly love the lyrics, but it's also got such a subtle, relaxed groove for a song with so much to say. It's one of those great, deceptively simple pop songs that can be appreciated on many levels and gets better the closer you listen to the lyrics.

  • Fantastic tune !!!

  • Yeah, catch the opening line: "Hang out the flags, the New World Order's coming...". Illuminati-Luciferian Fourth Reich antidote to WW3, signalled in a song written when?

  • plasticweapon - God is not a gangster - if God was meddling in our affairs - Paddy Macloon would be celebrated all over the world for the musical, lyrical and brilliant signer that he is. Paddy has been ill - not struck down by God. You just have to look at all his talents to see that he truly blessed. Life - throws these things at us. With hearing and eye impairments Paddy is still better than all the rest.

  • amazing.

  • the ironic thing about the "who am i to tell you how to run your business when you could strike me blind" lyric is that years latter paddy McAloon partially lost his eyesight. maybe it would have happened regardless of whether he wrote the song, but who knows? god is a gangster and he's not afraid to let you know it.
