State Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O'Connell made a lightning tour of California on March 6, joining a coalition of teachers and education officials in voicing opposition to the governor's proposed cuts to public school funding. SEIU 1021 was there.
"What kind of state do you want this to be? It cannot be much of anything if we cut $4.8 billion from the future of our children," SEIU 1021 President Damita Davis-Howard told a large crowd at the Oakland event, where she was joined by member leaders from the 1021 Schools industry. "SEIU is willing to give everything we have to the fight to stop the cuts, to stop the race to the bottom."
