Could anyone out here in the Chicago area verify for me that there was a band called the or The Second Story? I saw the Shames play at the Riverside Golf Club at their annual 4th of July party - out back by the river, circa 1968. I swear - a band called the Second Story opened for them. There were also many concerts at a place in Riverside called the Youth Center, by the town hall. The Ides surely played there, Sasafrass, Styx, and many others. Do you recall...?
I saw The Cryan Shames in 1967 or 1968 at Lane Tech High School, in Chicago. They played in Lane's Auditorium. They played all of their songs from their two albums, Sugar & Spice and A Scratch In The Sky. The thing that really impressed me was how well they performed their songs, almost perfect to the recordings! I have a lot of respect for bands that can produce the songs live with the same sound that they did in the recording sessions.
went to a New Years Eve party in a Rosemont hotel, think it was '67, the year i got out of the Marine Corps. Buckinghams, Cryan Shamees, & the Colony Six were there.. had a great time, didn't care about the bands at that time, i was trying to get laid....hehehehehehe
I remember having this album back then. They had some good music. I remember one of the guys in the band had only one hand. Wore a hook on the other arm. I believe they called him JC Hook.
anyone in Chicago, Indiana, Michigan, Wisconsin LOVED these guys. They had a huge following It was always a good time with them. WLS really gave them airplay too. They were a band you had to see and be with to get the full appreciation. they were a party unto themselves. The magic somehow got lost on the recordings for me. Just being there with them live was a high, they loved their fans as much as the fans loved them.
@rktbusinc --- I think you hit it on the nail. Cryan Shames were shafted by Columbia and could have went alot further if they hadn't put their marketing into the Buckinghams.

There were very few top Chicago bands of this area that couldn't cut awesome harmonies.
Top notch vocals were a hallmark of Chicago bands of this era.
The neat part was that for the most part they could sing well live even with the fairly primitive PA systems of the day.
Amazing when you see how many fakers are out there today.
