Exposed -- Employees who don't cost California a dime and actually make it money

The continuing drama of California's desperate grasp to keep from being swallowed up by a turbulent sea of red ink took a bizarre turn today with the release of a video that found some state employees engaged in conduct certain to shock taxpayers and rattle the gold tea spoons of radio talk show hosts.

Running now on the main page of the California Statewide Law Enforcement Association Web site is a 4-minute video of six state employees freely admitting that their salaries don't cost the taxpayers a dime and that their jobs actually make the state money.

"This video is certain to stun a great many people," said Bruce Hotchkiss, president of the California Association of Regulatory Investigators and Inspectors, and one of the people caught on tape. "Not only are these state employees willing to come out and admit what the vast majority of Californians never knew, but they also talk about running around the state protecting its shoreline from oil spills, busting unscrupulous auto mechanics, stopping homes from being blown up by bad fumigation, and preventing the spread of communicable diseases found in the tens of thousands of beauty and barber shops."

Be very afraid, warned Alan Barcelona, president of the California Statewide Law Enforcement Association. "There are many more state employees like the ones on the video, putting themselves on the front lines of public safety, costing taxpayers nothing, and contributing money to the state's many special funds. They can be found at the DMV, Department of Alcohol Beverage Control, Dept. of Fish and Game, and many other state agencies."
