The sea calls to me:
Take me, ravish me,
I am yours to possess
If you can command my bliss.

O Lake Huron
A lion squall can smash down
In twenty minutes without warning
Gusting a hundred miles an hour
The waves blown flat without white caps
Horizontal rain flailing your face
And then in a moment it is passed
I know women like that:
With the hunger of the wind
They rise up
To devour you or empower you
It makes no difference to them.

One night, alone in a small craft,
The sky overcast
The waves breaking around
I sailed only by sound
To avoid running aground
I know women like that:
Shoals hidden in darkness
Uncharted, unmapped,
Where dreams are shattered
Live shipwrecked
And to survive them
You must make darkness your friend.

Even on dry land
Her bliss can suspend reason
And depth perception
At the touch of her hand
I lost my balance, my ability to stand--
I fell down a cliff,
I nearly died because of it.

Once when a bank of gray clouds
Closed in with thunder
And ribbons of lightning glancing down
Twilight fading into darkness
The mast and sails began to glow
With a purple, greenish light
And a humming sound like a bee hive
The hairs on our arms standing up
Excited by St. Elmos fire

I know women like that:
They have passions and moods
Men have never seen
Electric, their desires flair up
They touch you in the dark
And then, without a second thought,
Without a care, they depart.

I flew a spinnaker
Two thousand square feet of sail
Soft as silk,
Floating in the air off the bow
I kept the sail on the edge of a luff
Fluttering, quivering,
Hypersensitive to wind shift
The stays taut, the mast tense
For three hours of unbroken concentration

I wish making love could be like that--
The body and breath one,
Adrenaline and endorphins thick in the bloodstream
In translucent waves and whispering wind
Femininity reveals her beauty—
To be one with nature
And perceive
The inner light shining in all things.

Witness what I see--
If you could grasp the ocean
With your hands
Cup its water in your palms
Breathe into it so it takes on life and form
This is who she would be---(four pictures)

Her waves are soft and round
Splashing with laughter
My craft surges and rides,

Her moist, wet kiss
A thin mist upon my cheeks
The land vanishes from the horizon
Yet she remains by my side.

The sea never promised me
She would be an easy conquest
