no look. you could have known. the mig21 flew first in the early 50s.
the f5 is a light fighter about hte phantom times early60s ie 2nd generation.
the f16 f15 mig29 wiht fly by wire and starting highdigitalisation is 3rd generation. mirage2000 is right this corner with famed su27.
the upgrades of these were hten to m e e t 4th generation fighters. like f22. so su35 or late block f16 is hten called 4th generation and for marketing 4+ or 4++. but the airframes stay third generation

Well, not exactly.
Third Generation jet fighters are aircraft like the Mig-21 or the Northrop F-5. A french 3rd Generation jet was the Etendard IV.
Fourth Generation is from years 1970 to 1990 approximatively. Well, that's the way it has always been told to me.

phantom is second generation. flybywire f16 mig 29 f15 mirage deuxmilles is third genertaion
second generation was tryingto get away from cannon like phantom just to reintroduce it becasue the missiles were shxt-yet. they upgrade lots of 3rd generation jets and tried to sell it as 4th generation and then upradedmore and tried as 4+ or 4++, like mig29ovt as mig35. but the airframes are still 3rd

Rafale, Typhoon and Gripen are 4,5 Generation. 4th generation jet upgraded to 5th generation combat standards (well, it can be resumed like that).
3rd Generation aircraft are more like F-4 Phantom, F-104 or Mig-21.
The 4th generation is M2000, F15, F16, Su-27, etc...

@chenoir as far as i know the mirage had originally a 3rd generanto ncockpit and a third generation airframe.
its weaknesses are the crack delta wing area.
4th generation would be . . . . . . . rafale. typhoon. gripen.
5th generaiton is f22 and its cost effective derivative jsf.

AWESOME g forces. when they get high g s at 200 lousy knots means hte airframe is excellently capable of high gmaneuvers atthsoe speeds, right?
wonder if teh airframe can rally stand 13 g
and that from a third generation airframe.
