Dodging The Column - 1952 by British Transport Films. Hauling a 130ft distillation column 500 miles from Greenwich to the Forth Chemical Works at Grangemouth long before the introduction of motorways and by-passes using 2 chain drive Scammell`s and solid tyred bogies.
Some dodgy health & safety issues by todays standards - like crawling under moving trailers and hands infront of moving wheels!
Very nostalgic road and town/city scenes & commentary.
E W Rudd not Pickford's or Wynn's!

  • Spot the startled bird in The Potteries!!

  • The sheer size of this thing !!!

I live on the A6 between Manchester and Preston and to my Mum this coming past was one of her earliest memories - she was 5 at the time.

Wonder what route they took from London to get stuck in the Potteries ?!?!?!?

  • @sirdrivertraining I think its awesome size compared to regular traffic is shown very well at 4:23 as it crosses the bridge followed by a "dwarfed" fuel tanker.

I'm really pleased somebody remembers actually seeing it pass by. Thankyou (and your mum) for commenting ;)

  • You still see alot of Scammell Pioneer's, Explorer's, and Highwaymen at shows that have been preserved, but are there any of these older chain-drives still in existence?

  • @NitroNoriFan We have a 45ton chain drive one of the last built in 1946 it was new to a showman in doncaster it is now restored as the scammells in this film we were lucky to find two solid tyred bogie trailers the same as these two each one is rated at 35 ton so if anyone wants a 70 ton column moving at 12mph give me a call!

  • @tonylufc7 Are you taking it to any shows or rallies?

  • The young onlookers in this must all be pensioners now. I wonder if any of them have watched this and recognise themselves or anyone else? Or remember it passing through their town?

  • @NitroNoriFan i know of one

  • Cool video crazy to see how close people were able to be back then.

  • I would have thought taking it by sea would make more sense, as its going from Grennwich, on the Thames, to Grangemouth, on the Forth.

  • @NitroNoriFan No problem : )

Ive got some stories from the 80s with "big loads" as we called them and the A6 - no pictures though unfortunatley but they were always really tall not long like this and had BT in front of then lifting the Phone wires with long poles as they went underneath !!!

  • Scammell were built near me.

Funny how even the sheep were interested!
