It seems incongruent that the oldest inhabited Citadel in Eastern Europe, with its lovely colorwashed houses siding ancient cobblestoned streets could be over run with morning rush hour. That is the story though here in what is supposed to be a UNESCO Heritage site. One might ask why? Well profit of course. A private company (in part owned by the deputy mayor of Sighisoara himself) owns all rights to parking and car access in the Citadel. Every car that enters between 8am and 10pm pays just under a $5 toll. The majority of this money goes not to preserving the heritage or beauty or charm of this medieval citadel, but into the pockets of private business as the cars destroy the streets, the buildings, and the charm of this medieval Saxon town.
