This is an edited collection of American representations of Japan in the immediate postwar period. While the Pacific War had been a particularly brutal war of attrition that ultimately saw the wide-scale bombardment of Japanese urban areas, American attitudes toward Japan improved extremely rapidly by the mid-1950s. Issues of national strategy are relevant to the political rapprochement, but as for the broader population, Hollywood images were important catalysts for these changes in attitudes.
