This is Matthew Sloan, the student speaker at the Commonwealth College's 3rd Annual Celebration of Excellence. Matthew Sloan of Beverly, Mass., is a Commonwealth College Biology major with a minor in geography. Due to his superb laboratory skills he was selected to do undergraduate research in inorganic chemistry, behavioral psychology, and nutrition. Sloan studied sustainable practices and alternative health in Senegal and India. He served as chancellor of elections for the student government and founded and served as president of the Pi Kappa Phi fraternity. Sloan founded the campus's first 5K road race in support of Push America, raised $6,000 to cycle cross-country from Seattle to Washington, D.C., in support of organizations serving those with disabilities, and volunteered at a Ho Chi Minh City orphanage for children with cerebral palsy. He also worked with Habitat for Humanity in New Orleans. Sloan will pursue a master's degree in public health. He hopes eventually to work for an international health organization. His speech, "A Breath Together" was presented at the 3rd Annual Celebration of Excellence, which took place on Saturday May 23, 2009 at the Mullins Center in Amherst, MA.
