The Lord placed upon my heart a teaching word about the strong nuclear forces that exist in creation and work to our advantage. We are fearfully and wonderfully made, the psalm says, and so true it is. We know that, at the atomic level, matter is nearly completely empty space. A perfect model of the atom is to look out into our solar system. Imagine that the sun is the nucleus of the atom, and the planets are the electrons. The solar system is nearly all empty space, right? I mean, if you could hold the entire solar system in your hands and look at it, there would be a big ball (the sun) and several tiny balls (the planets), each of them separated by truly incredibly vast distances. We are not going to place asteroids, moons and comets into the example; we are keeping it simple. So, the solar system is 99.999 percent empty space, right? Well, so are we! You know that we are composed of quintillions of atoms. Well, my point is that these atoms are 99.999 percent empty space. It seems confusing and paradoxical, but we are 99.999 percent empty space! The chair that I am sitting on is 99.999 percent emptiness also. The reason why I do not fall through to the floor and fall through the center of the planet is the strong nuclear forces that exist within the individual atoms. These electromagnetic forces are extremely powerful. It takes a nuclear explosion to blow them apart, remember? So, that is what I am sitting on, the invisible electromagnetic force. None of the nuclei in my body, or those in my body and the chair, is lined up and touching. Don't think of it as if the nucleuses were all lined up and stacked atop one another. That is not how it is. The nuclei are not stacked atop one another. At the atomic level, there appears to be nothing visible that keeps me from falling through the atoms of the chair. I appear to be sitting on empty space, and the atoms of my bottom appear to be separated by vast distances, as do the atoms that make up my underclothing and shorts. "He is able to keep you from falling," takes on a whole new meaning when you understand the fact that we are standing on nothing but the invisible electromagnetism that bonds atoms together.

We have been speaking of atoms, let us now switch to molecules. Recently, I discovered yet another wonderful and fearful fact about how we are made. There is a protein molecule called laminin that binds all of us together. Each cell in our bodies is composed of millions of molecules, and each of those molecules is chemically bonded to the molecules around them by molecules of laminin. We know that we are composed of groupings of atoms. We call these groupings molecules. The chemicals that combine to form DNA, for instance, are made of combinations of specific protein molecules. But what is it that binds together the protein molecules into the nucleotide sequences that form the chains of DNA? That molecule is yet another protein molecule, and its name is laminin. Laminin is the molecular glue of our bodies. Laminin holds every molecule in our cells glued to the other molecules around them. Remove laminin from us and we fly apart into disassociated atoms. "In Him we live and move and have our being." "In him all things consist..." To say that in Christ all things consist is to say that in Christ all things are held together. This means Christ holds everything together. We already believe this by faith. Laminin demonstrates that it is literally true that Christ holds us together. That is because the laminin molecule, the one that is the protein glue of the body, is shaped exactly like a cross. That is right, believer! The molecular glue that holds every chemical in our bodies bonded to all of the chemicals that they are associated with is laminin, and laminin is shaped like a cross. I believe that God made laminin in the shape of a cross because He knew that by the time mankind became scientifically advanced enough to be able to look into molecules, many people would have lost their faith. So, He placed His signature, the shape of the cross, on every molecular bond that links the molecules together that form us. Yes, saints, we are fearfully and wonderfully made. Not only are we 99.999 percent empty space and stand on nothing but invisible magnetic force, we are also held together a thousand quadrillion protein molecules that are shaped like the cross of our Savior. Oh, what a mighty God we serve! We are fearfully and wonderfully made! Hallelujah! Amen.
