This song is about a woman being molested as a child. I think screaming vocals--even if they are out of his range--are justifiable. The emotion in his voice is so powerful. From what I can tell, his singing just as powerful live as it is on the record.

@WadeMathias True enough. I admire Will Sheff for not writing music around his vocal limitations. Regardless of everything else, the guy has wonderfully expressive delivery.

Congrats to laptop monkeys who can listen to a gut-wrenchingly emotional live performance and crap on it because "it didn't sound like it did on the record". Suggestion: if you demand pitch perfection at all times, go listen to a Katy Perry album that's been run through 15 different autotune plug-ins.

Sadly, I have to agree. I love Okkervil River and I think Will is one of the best songwriters working today, but his voice can be pretty spotty. You can tell he's pushing his range on the album, which we can assume represents ideal conditions. When his voice isn't 100 percent, he can get a little screamy trying to hit those high notes.
