In the grim, Blitz-scarred London of the early 1950s, Hester Collyer (Rachel Weisz) sits alone and miserable in a shabby boarding house. She remembers her former life as the privileged wife of respected high court judge William Collyer (Simon Russell Beale), and how that ended when she met dashing ex-RAF pilot Freddie Page (Tom Hiddleston) at a golf club.
For Hester, it was love at first sight. To the astonishment of her friends and relatives, she walked out on William to build an uncertain new life fuelled by her intense passion. But is she caught between the devil and the deep blue sea?
Adapted from the 1952 play by Terence Rattigan (whose work is currently enjoying a revival), 'The Deep Blue Sea' is a powerful assault on respectable post-War values. From acclaimed British director Terence Davies, it features a superb performance from Rachel Weisz.
