Self Portrait

Some of these details may be off, it's been a while since I made this.

This is the experimental film I made in Spring 2005. My professor, Jeremy Moorshead, gave the class the theme of "Expose the Illusion". He also paired us with an experimental musician, who's name I have forgotten. He goes uncredited, but I feel that his musical contribution made the film successful.

This film is about my own illusion. I was being religious for my personal gain rather than a true belief. At the time, my family was not aware of my decision to leave the church.

Artistically, the goal was to find a way to create an animated film without doing a single drawing. After all, a drawing is an illusion and the film was supposed to be experimental, not narrative.

With the help of my friend, Sean Feeley, we shot footage of myself standing in front of a green screen. I also scanned a family portrait. In a compositing program, I put the video of myself together with the still of my family. I added the noise, distortion, and contrast and exported the frames. I then printed out all of the frames and shot video of myself laying the frames under a camera. The video was then sped up to an appropriate speed, and titles were added using the same technique.

I added part of the three part sermon that convinced me that I was not religious to the audio with the music. The preacher was credited when the film when out to festivals, but I have chosen to leave his name out of this write up.

Special thanks to Jeremy Moorshead, Sean Feeley, and Stormy Gunther. Stormy was responsible for helping send the film to a few festivals.

I wasn't financially stable enough to submit the film to festivals when I made it, and I hope that through youTube people who wouldn't have been able to see it will get to enjoy it.
