I lived in Riga for a year, and our Latvian language teacher taught us this song as the most quintessential of Latvian songs. She was so moved when we sang this song for her in parts. During that time, my group taught a group of lessons at the Latvian Pedagogical Institute, and at the end, as thanks, the teachers sang Put Vejini for us. It was so beautiful.

It was sung in song festivals that took place during the Soviet time in Latvia, but once it was taken out of the official program because some communist party officials thought it is too national, but at the end of the concert the choir started to sing it anyway and there was nothing to be done. So it is kinda symbolic song of resistance too.

This really is unofficial Latvian anthem. In the Soviet times when real national anthem was prohibited this was sung instead and that is why among many Latvian or Livonian songs this stands out.

@MrCilburn I am an Estonian and have to admit, that for me this is the most beautiful song in the world. I like it in all the languages, where it has been translated to - originally Livonian, but Latvian and Estonian are very beautiful too. Finnish version is also good. "Mu isamaa on minu arm" definitely has its own charm and backstory, I wouldn't prefer one to the other.
