Patient Education will play a much more prominent role as Medicare and CMS measure hospitals on both clinical benchmarks and patient service called Patient Experience of Care.
Patient Experience of Care is measured based on random surveys of patients about their hospital stay and includes the following factors:
* How well nurses communicate with patients
* How well doctors communicate with patients
* How responsive hospital staff are to patients' needs
* How well caregivers manage patients' pain
* How well caregivers explain patients' medications to them
* How clean and quiet the hospital was
* How well caregivers explain the steps patients and families need to care for themselves outside of the hospital (i.e., discharge instructions)
The survey also asks patients to give an overall satisfaction rating to their hospital stay. If hospitals fail to perform well in this area it can put a negative light on them even if their clinical performance is top notch. See blog post at http://bit.ly/oTM3wn.
The key to doing well is to develop a strategy to step up patient education by providing your nursing staff with the technology and tools they need to maximize their time with patients and increase the amount of education that takes place in the hospital to better prepare the patient and caregiver for discharge and life after the hospital stay.
