This 60-year old song still sounds relevant as when it was first recorded back in 1949. Actually, The Andrews Sisters were the first one who recorded the song ahead of Jo Stafford-Gordon Macrae's version. But for some unknown reason, it was shelved.
We used to call this song "sopas" during our caroling stints in the past. As far as I know, it's only in the Philippines where they include this song as a Christmas carol while "Ave Maria" is considered a funeral song when it should belong to Christmas carols. Funny isn't it?

  • This hymn was written shortly after the Civil War. It is now about 140

years old. And it was recorded long before the Andrews sisters.

But whatever the facts, it's a wonderful song. By Septimus Winner who

also wrote "Listen to the Mocking Bird".

    Tnx 4 the nostalgic post.

  • Whether this song is inspirational or a christmas carol, I don't care! I just love to listen to it. But thanks for the info I didn't realize it was a 1949 vintage. Thank you for sharing and to you tube for making it all happen. Victor, Nevada USa

  • This is one of my favorite inspirational recordings by the trio. Such beautiful, lilting harmonies. The audio has some slight ticks & the speed is a bit slow, but it's great to have any exposure for Patty, Maxene & LaVerne, who, considering their large, impressively eclectic body of work are much too often overlooked for their 29 years of studio-recorded material. It's past time that MCA compile & release all of their material! John Sforza ("Swing It! The Andrews Sisters Story").

  • This is my one of my favorite songs they did in 1949. I also liked "I Can Dream Can't I".

  • yup indeed in the visayas too it sounds like Sopas da voice ha ha ha. never heard this version before. It's nice to know the original, I used to sing this loudly with the rest during caroling together with the 3 kings of oriental. brings back sweet memories of the 70's.

  • cool song

  • Thanks for the infos on this song...Does it mean it is not considered a Christmas song in other countries?
