I think those girls are just being inconsistent. A lot of people make gay friends, or even have gay family members, but they still retain a lot of social or cultural ideas about faggy-ness. The thing is: even those girls only call GUYS fags, because when a girl acts weak that's "just natural". Weak guy = fag, strong woman = bitch. A guy who acts weak is failing his gender role or acting "effeminate", hence he's a fag.

Every time I hear someone use homophobic slurs against someone for the simple reason that the other person is gay (or they think they're gay), I lose an infinite amount of respect for them. That's even worse than when I hear people deny everything that they've learned about science because they think that the first two chapters of their book written 3000 years ago should be taken as absolute Word of God truth.

The thing is, much of the time people don't treat them the same way. I know girls who have multiple gay guys in their group that they hang out with and respect, and yet, I've heard these same girls calling guys who were acting weak or socially awkward a fag, regardless of their sexuality. And many people, like Louis CK or this "Rogue Negro" guy, never use the word when referring to males whom they see as homosexual, unless the gay guy is being a weak or socially awkward (if then).
