This song was written in the late 18th century by John Newton, an English minister who once took part in the slave trade to the west indies. then he understood the cruelty of the trade and became one of the most fighting abolitionists of the 18th century. thus is song is one of repentence and of hope !

@number1covers and others who think Joanie "ruined" the song-- this method of singing-- giving the words first-- was how it was done in the 'old days' when churches were too poor to buy hymnals for everyone which very few could read the words or the music anyway. This traditional method of church singing was probably how the song was sung originally in the first place--- Joanie didn't "ruin" anything-- she took the song back to its roots, encouraging others to sing along..
