Funiculi, Funicular, lyrics by Peppin Turco (an Italian Journalist), music by Luigi Denza. It was written in 1880 to commemorate the opening of the first funicular (railway) on Mount Vesuvius. Richard Strauss unintentionally plagerised the piece. He thought it was a traditional Italian piece, and so incorporated it into his Aus Italien symphony. Denza filed a successful lawsuit against Strauss, who was forced to pay royalties to Denza whenever Aus Italien was played. I did read somewhere that, despite this little mis-understanding the two men became good friends.
