Wrangell Mountains, Alaska
August 21, 2007
Here we're learning how the malamutes are trained for Alaska's annual dogsled race, the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race. This is the most demanding race of its kind because it covers about 1,151 miles from Anchorage to Nome in 8-15 days and in sub-zero blizzard weather conditions.
This training arena belongs to the family of Susan Butcher, an American sled-dog racer and four-time winner of the Iditarod. Butcher died in 2006 due to leukemia but her husband, David Monsoon (who is in the video and whose voice is barely heard) continues racing to keep her memory alive.
