"Nick?!" Kevin threw his arms up to cover his mouth. He wanted to stop himself from saying anything he might regret.
Joe just stayed on the couch and cried. He and Nick decided a long time ago that if they were ever going to tell Kevin, they would do it together. They knew it would hurt too much if just one of them had to break the news to him. "That's why Ive been acting like this. I miss him!"
"Joseph..." Kevin's voice rang with disappointment. "How could you guys?"
"You wouldn't understand it."
"No! I dont! That would be like me dating yo..." Kevin stopped himself before finishing his thought. "Excuse me, I have to go throw up. Kevin ran to the bathroom."
Joe ran to his room with his tears streaming down his face. He plopped down on Nicks bed and scream into his pillow.
Twenty minutes had gone by before Paul arrived home. Kevin had gone to his bedroom after throwing up in the bathroom. He hadnt come out since.
Paul immediately called Kevin out of his room.
"Yeah." Kevin grunted.
"How is he?"
"Sick." Kevin huffed out.
"Sick?" Paul asked concerned.
Kevin registered what he was telling his father about his brother. He couldnt possibly tell him that about Joe. "Yeah, he's not feeling well."
"That still doesnt excuse his behaviour."
"Dad, he finally told me what was bothering him."
"What?"
"I can't tell you. Its between Nick, Joe and myself. He now realizes how he was acting and is sorry for it. Please dont punish him."
"I'm glad that he finally opened up to someone, but I promised him a punishment."
"But, dad..." Kevin whined.
"Can you go pick Frankie up from the babysitters?"
"Yes." Kevin felt bad for Joe. He knew that everything Joe told him was completely wrong on so many levels. He also knew that he didnt deserve to get punished for it. He hung his head as he left the house.
Paul sighed before heading to his teenagers bedroom. He didn't knock before he opened the door. He found Joe face down, screaming into Nicks pillow. Paul didnt get any kind of registrations from the boy when he sat on the bad beside him. "Joseph?" Paul asked gently.
Joe cried for a moment longer before looking up at his father. "Dad, I'm really sorry. I been so mean to you and I feel terrible about it."
"Are you just saying that cause you know that Im going to punish you?"
Joe sniffled. "No. I mean it."
"I'm glad then."
Joe put his head back into the pillow and cried a little longer. Paul softly stroked his back. Paul was trying to calm him down. He knew that Joe wouldnt get this worked up over getting a spanking, so something else must have been bothering him. "How are you feeling son?"
Joe sobered up and sat up on the bed. "I'm fine, I guess." Joe sniffled some more. Then he looked down at his hands and pleaded, "Am I still going to get a... you know..."
"A spanking?" Paul finished Joe's question. "Yes."
Joe closed his eyes at the dreaded word. "Daddy, please. I'm sorry. I learned my lesson. I still am sore from yesterday."
"I know, but son, you disobeyed me again and talked back to me. I cant just let that go."
Paul patted his lap and indicated that he wanted Joe over it. Joe let another tear fall before he complied. Paul started right away, trying to get it over with quickly. He slapped his open hand over Joes tight pants. He didnt feel the need to use anything more than that because he knew Joe was already sore and he wanted to believe Joe was sorry. This punishment was just to reinforce his rules about how the young man should act.
Joe cringed when his father started to hit harder and faster. Joe was nearly in tears of pain before his father stopped and sat Joe upright. Paul gave Joe a tight hug, then left him alone.
