"CCCP" by The Veldt

Of course you've never heard of them... and it's a shame.

Chapel Hill, NC band The Veldt were a truly unique band, fusing hip-hop and R&B with effects-laden dream-pop. Unfortunately, the band is no more... but when I heard this song way back in 1992, I was utterly convinced that they were the future of rock 'n' roll. Oh well...

This is my favorite song by them, from the EP "Marigolds". I think these are my favorite drums in any song, ever.

I was lucky enough to catch them live once, and while they didn't play "CCCP", I did manage to meet them. Nice guys, and they revealed to me that this song is about the movie "Dr. Zhivago" (my grandma's favorite movie).

Gotcha, I mean the demo tape they used to sell at their shows. They used to tour Atlanta a lot and I would always see them. So, before a formal release they used to sell these homemade tapes at shows. Fantastic live.

They definitely were a great show. Out of all the shows I saw way back when, theirs is one of the few I would truly want to go back in time for.

I hear their new band Apollo Heights is just as good live, and from the live videos on YouTube, it looks like they just might be.
