This year the Mexican Student Association will be dancing a song, from the southwestern state of Jalisco, called "El Son de La Negra." The song tells a story about a man who pledges his love for "La Negra," which means the black lady. He forever waited for her to come back from the tobacco fields where she worked, hopping she would wear the silk shawl he sent her with her uncle. This was a symbol of a marriage proposal; her wearing it would have signified her acceptance. Since he never got a reply, he wished every other man who wooed her to meet the same fate as him. And now we present: "El Son de La Negra."
This happened on Thursday March 10th, 2011 @ Rudder Theatre on campus.
I know there is some people yelling euphorically, and you can hardly hear the music at some points :) but you get the idea of the effort we put into learning the dance in less than a month, and how excited our friends were. VIVA MEXICO!
Les quedó bien, felicidades!
