A tutorial on how to format an OpenOffice bibliography (to meet APA, MLA, etc.)

This allows you to automatically generate a fully-formatted bibliography from the reference materials you used in a paper.

See parts 1 and 2 for more information about the basics of OpenOffice bibliographies and how to manage your reference materials in the bibliography database.

  • In this example, the shortname is replaced with a number because we selected "Number Entries" under "Edit Index/Table".

    For APA format:

    * Uncheck "Number Entries"

    * Set brackets to be parenthesis "( )"

    * Remove "shortname" from the bibliography format

    * Fill in shortnames as "AuthorLastName, Year" - to make citations look like (Johnson, 2011)

    MLA format is a bit more complicated because each citation looks different. We are relaunching the website soon and will have pre-formatted templates.
