Here's the first clarinet section of the U of Mich Symphony Band, (William D. Revelli, cond.) playing von Weber's Polacca from the Second Clarinet Concerto. Notice the meticulous articulation, impeccable intonation throughout the entire range of the instrument(s) and beautiful phrasing. This piece seldom receives such TLC and especially considering there are 6 performers! Apparently this was quite a hit on the 1961 USSR Tour. N. Y. Times compared it to Toscanini's concert when he featured the entire violin section playing Perpetual Motion by Paganini. Positive comments welcome. • As a fairly decent clarinetist, I tried to play this---not so much. Back

in the sixties I heard the UM band at the Academy of Music in Philadelphia. The first clarinet section played this and absolutely blew me away! Only thing about that concert I remember as maybe being more amazing was the girl who played the oboe solos on Italian in Algiers. Incredible!!!! That was the best band concert I ever heard. I still remember it. What an marvelous, marvelous band! Bravo!!! Bravo!!!

  • As a former member of the Michigan Symphony Band under Dr. Revelli, I remember him telling us that Eugene Gonzalez was responsible for rehearsing the six first clarinetists playing this piece. We were 100 persons strong when I played under Revelli -- men and women. The first clarinet section always numbered six.

  • @Sinsr240

When we went on tour Revelli listened to every member of the band (scarry!) and eliminated some because of the expense.

BTW - I had a strong "Twilight Zone"dream about Revelli recently. In the dream he reminded me that 2011 will be the 50th anniversary of the tour. I wonder if anything is being planned for that (like a release of some of the Leningrad and Moscow concerts? Something to hope for!

  • HOLY CRAP THAT SEXTUPLET PART!!!!!!!!! I can't play that this well!!!!!! SMOKIN"!!!!!!!!!!!!! I attempted this piece without this kind of success. This is insane! Surely they must've have found professional jobs after this!!!!

  • @maestrojimbo They are having a 50th anniversary reunion of the tour band next weekend in Ann Arbor.

  • Absolutely FANtastic.

  • @Jaip234 Did you bother to listen to it,? Does it SOUND under-rehearsed. Go by what you HEAR not what you SEE!

  • @Jaip234 Huh? You aren't making any sense. Want to rephrase your comment?

  • @maestrojimbo You sound like a buzz kill.I mean...it makes the piece sound so much better when you hear that the members actually practiced instead of "we hardly rehearsed it"

  • Thanks for posting this!
