@FoieGras In original Okinawan version, we don't use the three hops. You can see the original version of the kata in Shorin Ryu Kyudokan and Shorin Ryu Shubukan. Therefore, the hops are added to this kata later on, when it was introduced to Japan. :-)) Kind regards!!!
@zakardo urgh just say shotokan, saying jka karate makes it sound too political, and there are many different interpretations of the hops, one is that the attacker has you by the lapel and you are hopping back to pull them off balance, therefore the kata ends before you deliver the finishing blow.
i was taught, that the last three (and i understand the strange feeling by doiung it) are representing the sanchin. in other words the end of the kata doesn't automatically mean the end of the fight. well, this is another possible explanation. i think, there is still a lot to discuss... ossu...
at 0:20 when sense kanazawa makes that move he does the move over the arm but when this guy does it he makes the move under the arm can any1 clear this up????
I read the hops are to reallign with the starting point on the embusen.

@aiko4321 Still, I get the feeling that if that was the only intention, he would have added a stepping back-leveled with raised awareness.
Maybe jumping over ground sweeps? This is, afterall, a kata with a strong Chinese Martial Art influence

I always heard this was because it's unfinished, to return to the starting
position
