Students, faculty and staff of the Lahore University of Management Sciences participated in a huge rallt in protest of emergency rule in Pakistan. The turnout was more than a 1000 people. This was all held among severe tension as threats of the intelligence agency hung over protestors head. The protestors heard speeches in the sports complex, sang the national anthem, half-circled the campus in a silent rally before being turned back due to security concerns caused by the heavy presence of riot police beyond the main gate of the university who threatened to tear gas and baton charge protestors and were waiting to catch any group of them who attempted to venture out. The protestors then shouted rousing patriotic slogans outside the cafeteria before dispersing for a sit-in at the main gate, where they covered their mouths with brown tape symbolising the loss of freedom of speech in their country. In response to sohaib1's point about why we don't come out on the streets:-

True. We've all been thinking that. But everyone's been advising us not to. By everyone i mean journalists and media. See the benefit from going out would be - proving the point that we mean business to the state, to people and most of all to ourselves. The cost is we'de get a good beating and a glimpse of the police station, potentially revitalising us but more probably getting our parents seriously on our backs as in take the son/daughter out of college and at home for a while, the police would have our names and they would be able to monitor and threaten us more easily and all this could lead to a potential thinning of ranks before the movement has even fully come into life. that's why we've decided to wait until our numbers are a bit more - we have to have a coordinated student march all over the country guys so we can make a BIG POINT about PRINCIPLES and the RULE OF LAW. How long can we be satisfied with being thorns in the side of the police in the form of sporadic outbursts of institution-specific trouble. we have to get together guys and become a force to reckon with. its about the students and their conscience, their pride and their demands! Not random institutions! come on everyone! get in touch! whether at home or abroad!! whether pakistani or non-pakistani! and let me say muslim or non-muslim if run of the mill thoughts are coursing through anyone's minds... (anyone who cares, get in touch!)

  • a very calm protest but i think this how it goes, comming on street would tell the world what the up comming genration wants. How ever the consqences wont allow - even on this occasion police ready performe to shut the voice of any or everyone - it's not that easy but if student all over gathered to single percpective than every problem would get a remedy.

  • ... cont ... There have been struggle against Musharraf for long time , which is finally bearing fuit , Shaheed Ghazi and his group were the ones who got martyred for this ! and now when things are almost done , Voila lums is out to put its label and quickly put it on international news through there contacts ... what a cheap publicity !!!

  • Just chanting slogans because major businesses/board members affiliated did not get some subsidy or maj govt contract and just exploiting the situation!Musharraf would anyways be ousted or killed, look at ur own lifestyle and univ culture to see how much adherent to islam ??? does lums looks like university in islamic rep of pakistan ? cont ...

  • You kick them where it hurts the most. I visited the lums once and place is pathetic. Rich kids smooching around , guys lying in laps of girls. You dont feel for a moment that you are in some islamic country . They are just wolf in sheep dressing , most fearful of an islamic system in Pakistan ! From outside they try to be hero , but would only vote for those supporting musharraf !

  • I really appreciate their efforts. They should continue it and also went to streets untill root out of musharraf regime.

  • keep it up

  • Unless they do not come out from LUMS. They are just wasting their time. Btw I had studied LUMS 4 years too... and happy to know their feelings. But it is useless unless they challenge Govt. and come out ...
