A look at Saturn through a telescope 2009. The rings of Saturn can be seen in even the most modest of optical instruments. I first saw it when I was about 13 and had just got a 3in toy Newtonian for Christmas. I was just pointing it a bright things in the sky and was stunned to see Saturn, rings and all, sitting there on the velvety black sky like a tiny, but perfect painted gem.

Saturn is currently (March 2009) due South at about midnight.

Saturn at the moment is not as impressive as when the rings are open but its always amazing when you see this planet, the more so as you know the Huygens probe now sits on Titan.

The software used for showing the movement of the planets is called Celestia. Its free and great fun to play with.

  • That's no moon! It's a... wait, no... yeah, it's a moon. Sorry, my mistake.

5 bright stars for you, Mr Thunderf00t. :)

  • You, sir, have such a beautiful way of putting things.

"around that bright spot up there, is... is a moon and on that moon there is something that is made on Earth."

The simplicity of the statement, subjected on something so utterly awe inspiring, just makes my spine tingle.

  • Really like what you did with this one.

  • Cool video interesting fact abt huygens probe. Definitely going to look that. I saw saturn last night next to our supermoon. It was faint but viewable. Titan was right there as well.

  • i love your video how are you filming that

  • It sounds like Pierce Brosnan talking!

  • How cool would it be, if in however many years time, our cameras would be able to take pictures like Hubble Space Telescope!?

  • love the way you presented it

  • even if humanity caeses to exist, due to the sun becoming a red giant or a GRB or whatever, our existence is proved to any who may pass our solar system :)

  • Interesting video!

I always think Saturn is one of the most beautiful sights in a telescope

  • how did you do the split screen on celestia?
