Topping the new water tower on Kent's East Hill marks a major milestone in the city's efforts to improve water service for its customers.

A 75-feet in diameter cap was placed by a construction crane early Wednesday morning.

The city is completing construction of a new 4 million-gallon water tower, a primary component in a much larger project to improve water pressure for residents in the higher sections of East Hill.

"As part of our larger system improvement plan, the new tower will help ensure better water pressure and adequate flow to about 3,000 homes," Public Works Director Tim LaPorte said. "Besides better water pressure in the shower, this is an especially important safety component for firefighting"

Located on city-owned property at SE 248th Street and 124th Ave SE, the new tower stands 138 feet tall and is the highest point in Kent.

The new tower is being built by T. Bailey, Inc. of Anacortes at a cost of approximately $4 million.

After painting and construction of a control building, the new reservoir is slated to be ready for use this fall.
