I feel the best thing is to allow for competing capitalistic currencies. It works well for credit cards, and for corporations that sell stock. Allow a group, be it an organization or company to give 'shares' of its wealth (namely commodities) to allow for direct trading for goods. These private companies will then need to compete with themselves and the state currency, and vice-versa. This promotes a stable economy by stopping inflation/deflation in its tracks.

A currency needs to be backed by a credible nation's central bank. The full faith and credit of the U.S. backs the dollar so that's why it's the defacto world currency.

The euro is an alternative to the dollar, but not much of one because Europe can't get its act together. You think the world would do any better?

What people may not understand that if they do go to this new currency, you will loose whatever wealth you have in dollars. You will loose 50%, 75% or all of it.
