This video shows how I fixed the "Open Tray" problem on my xbox 360 slim 250gb console which was manufactured 5/22/10! Hopefully it helps you too.

Quick Steps...

1. Eject tray and unplug power cord so it stays open and you can manually move the tray in/out as needed. DONT DO THIS WITH THE XBOX ON!

2. With the tray open, a flashlight, and a solid wire ready, you have to peak in there... basically looking in from the front right above the open tray.

3. Locate the white plastic piece on the right side, thats what I pulled the laser from because its safer as its just a plastic piece. Look in the video, and you'll see the slide rails (like the small metal rod with spring on it in the video)

Your goal is just to pull (slide) the laser forward. Nothing else. When you see the laser come forward a bit, you should be good to go.

Good Luck!

  • This is not a fix it mabie helps for a while but if you want a perma fix check out my page i have a video that shows you how to permanantly fix it while the disk tray is disassembled/opened up

  • @Timsmod

This is a fix. Its not a permanent fix, but as I stated in the video, its an option others can try without having to open the xbox and void warranty. It does work, and I've had to do it once more since then.

  • No, I just had it open all the way. The purpose of this fix was to "unjam" the laser on the track without opening/breaking and voiding warranty. It's a tough angle to view in there, but doable. Also, note that this fix is not for all versions of the dvd drive. Good luck.

  • I had it pulled out pretty much all the way. The whole thing about this fix is to pull the laser towards the front so that its not stuck in the back anymore. That white piece was just where I pulled from as I felt it was safe to not damage anything. You can try to pull it from something else, assuming its the same drive.

  • @idevweb hey will this work for the 4g edition

  • @venomillusionz I'm not sure. I think the earlier slims have the same disc drive as the reg 360's that were selling before the slims. My last 360 had a similar issue, though I didnt try this on it. Try to identify your disc drive, and you could try this fix. Good luck.

  • i know how to fix the open tray error its not working beacause the laser is stuck in the back to get unstuck unplug your xbox and all other cords turn it so that the faceplate is facing downwards and just shake the xbox lightly down it should make the laser go back to the starting position if it dosent work too bad.

  • @jdrgroves86 do you think you can make a vid of it pls

  • if your tray wnt shut or just keeps opening again the xbox already has a lining tool set up in it to correct the drive back to default u dnt need to open it just take the top piece of the xbox oppesite your hard drive there u will find a little hole push sumtin thin in the hole till tray opens and pull it out then push it bk it then push a thin pin in again and open it wen u power on ur xbox it shud close NO NEED TO TAKE IT APART OR PROD THINGS U CANT SEE IT WILL FUCK IT UP

  • Hey can some one help me in finding that white thing

  • @SureShot1017 Really? Mine is out of warranty and the tray wont open by itself or read any disc's.. might consider that option.

  • My daugther* (9months) opened the disc tray and i guess hit it with her hand and now my disc tray is half way open and dont even want to close. :-(

  • what sucks is that mine is the limted edition xbox for mw3

  • and if they cant i get a new one :)
