The Music:
Maeandros performs a very unique mix of repertoire ranging from the folk music of Greece and former Greek lands in Asia Minor (Turkey), to urban "tavern" songs of the major Aegean cities of Constantinople (Istanbul), Smyrna (Izmir), Athens, and Thessaloniki, along with classical music of the Ottoman court, all from the early 20th century or earlier.
In addition, the ensemble also performs original material written by Mavrothi Kontanis and inspired by the traditional music of the Aegean.
The Musicians:
Maeandros is based in the New York City area, and was founded by oud player and singer Mavrothi Kontanis. The ensemble includes some of the most talented and soughtafter performers and teachers of Greek and Near Eastern music in the country.
While always pushing selfexpression and improvisation, each member of the Maeandros Ensemble has a deep respect for the music and fellow musicians in the group, and this comes through in every performance.
