I remember watching this live when I was about 14 and I thought they were GODS. I made my parents watch and couldn't have cared less. ;-(...pretty funny now to think about it now since I have kids.

De-evolution is REAL!!

thats because most punks are numb in the head, have identity issues, and think its cool to rebel against society by copying their favorite rebellious band.

best post ever. nothings as hilarious as going to a punk concert and having the band sing about CONFORMITY IS BAD LOLZ.
then you count the people with identical outfits on and go "UH" , and leave because the band sucks anyways.
theres nothing non conformist about buying "rock n roll" outfits and standing with 900 other people in a bar, getting drunk going UP THE PUNX, and carrying on like asshats.

Good point. I remember John Lydon complaining that they was disappointed how the punk audience sort of adopted The Sex Pistols look (which was a reaction against how glitzy rock music had gotten) as a "new uniform" as it were. I think he felt that you could look any way you want to, but the punks all chose to look the same.

Let me end the Deveo categorization debate - they are of the genre "Devolutionists" and to date they are the only band in this category.
Good to see also that the theory of devolution is gaining ground recently and finding scientific evidence.
Devolution is real spuds!

@2refinish Sooooo true. You nailed it. Iv'e loved them since 1979 when I first heard them. When I started getting into punk a lot of my friends didn't like them (although some of em did) but I held my ground knowing they were way ahead of their time and more punk than any of the other bands I listened to.

You've hit the nail on the head. DEVO were originals. They were called punk, new wave, art-rock, or whatever, but never derivative of anyone or anything. They are their own creation.
The fact that they're still going strong is a testament. They invented themselves, and still invent, sticking to their ethic of the art coming first and foremost.

he's such a powerful vocalist. look at that fuckin guy!!! not to mention the rest of the band of course. they're so tight with eachother, and playing such experimental music at that!

"they were so punk that many punks hated them"
That's because much to their dismay, most punks are MASSIVE conformists.
And they strut around like they are the apex of rebellion when in fact they are are hypocritical retarded merchants of the status quo.
Most people who think they are punk don't know the FIRST thing about being original. They are just like all the "normal" people that they make fun of.
So they are just as average, and elitist hypocrites as well.
im only 14 and i freakin love devo, awesome band
