Vigil in solidarity with the community in Phoenix, AZ
"Last night, over 100 people gathered in Washington, DC, to hold a vigil in solidarity with the people of Arizona. The vigil is one of hundreds happening this weekend as communities nationwide react to the passage of SB 1070, mandating racial profiling in Arizona.
The crowd gathered at Dupont Circle to pray, share stories, tears and the CONVICTION to continue the struggle for justice.
The youth were out in force, sharing their own personal stories of pain, injustice and ultimate triumph. On the steps of the fountain, surrounded by strangers, friends and compañeros in the movement one young man declared I am documented and unafraid.
Though the mood was initially somber, but the crowd gathered strength from one another and the tone changed to one of determination and action.
Rich Stolz, from the RI4A campaign notes:
A diverse spectrum of participants spoke out: a self-described gringo from WI, a young black woman called for solidarity, a young Haitian woman said we were burning for justice, and more.
Right now Im reflecting on a conversation I had with a white woman from Arizona who was appalled at the governors decision to sign SB1070, and angry that she was 3000 miles away from the fight. But she was grateful to join the fight on a rainy and breezy evening in the nations Capital. The movement continues to grow.
Last night, I saw the movement right here in Washington, DC and it was beautiful. My own family stood with me and looked into the eyes of strangers and friends alike to speak truth to power and remember that we are all in this together. (But that is a more personal post for a bit later).
And as I type, marchers are still on the streets of Phoenix, AZ and solidarity vigils are being held in cities throughout the country.
We will look back on history at SB 1070 (and yes, it will be defeated) and we will remember it as a moment that truly galvanized the movement. We will remember how we took tragedy and turned it into triumph.
