Kyle prepares to mount Joey for some riding work to finish out his day. Joey is being ridden in the rope halter right now for good reason. Kyle noticed some serious issues when he first got Joey and recommended he see our equine dentist, Diane Febles. Diane, who has a passion for her work and is very skilled in what she does, did find serious mouth problems. Joey's bottom jaw could not slide and he could not grind his teeth properly. He also had chewed up the insides of his cheeks pretty good and had a large laceration of his tongue! Diane got all that fixed up. She also checks the horse's overall health, as often these types of problems will affect other parts of the horse's body as he compensates for the pain in his jaw, poll, neck, etc. She found nothing that needed to be addressed and Joey is recovering quickly. No wonder the poor boy wasn't eating his hay! Anyway, the first few days, Kyle will be riding him in the rope halter, then switching to the bosal (bosal and mecate or jaquima or western hackamore). He will allow Joey at that point to begin carrying a bit, Kyle will only use the mecate to the bosal at first and gradually begin to two rein him and finally go to just the bit. This will allow Joey to gradually get used to carrying the bit properly and prepare him for communication through the bit, hopefully overlaying old patterns and habits from his mouth issue, with new and better ones.
