  • I assume your question about why is there Hell among the Yearlings is rhetorical since you're a Good Ol' Oklahoma boy! Anyone who's raised a teenager be it cattle or human knows how they can think and act! Great job on the fiddle as usual! Do you know Marmaduke's Hornpipe perchance??? It has some similar phrasing and bowing.

  • Yes, I was just seeing if anyone else knew what a yearling was...My family actually has quite a bit of cattle, so I do know what a yearling is. Just checking to see if everyone else does ;) Marmaduke's Hornpipe? Hmmm...I don't know that one. I've only been fiddling for 7 months. I played classical till high school, and quit. Started playing gospel music a couple of years ago, and figured the fiddle music would help me on my style and bowing. The bowing is the tough part. Thanks for the comment!

  • Hey, I did listen to the Arkansas Fiddle Champion do that Hornpipe, and it does have some similarities. I looked up that hornpipe on youtube. He does a great job of it too. If you watch it, you can see I commented on it a few months ago.

  • So, a yearling is referring to cattle. And the story goes that the "hell" is a dense underbrush that overtakes yearlings. This tune is also called rounding up the cattle and marmaduke's hornpipe

  • very nice, very smooth, commendable.

  • Yeah, very nice fiddling. Somehow I picture them as yearling colts rather than cattle. Raisin' a ruckus in the corral. But it's nice to leave it open to interpretation, eh?

  • This is good fiddling. Well done and thanks for sharing.

  • I was sure you knew what a yearling was. Maramaduke's Hornpipe is essentially the Missouri National anthem. I lived there from 1975-1977. Since Talequah is in the SW extension of the Ozarks, I thought it might have trickled down there. It easy to see that you retained all of your classical training - it shows up in your precision and left and right hand techniques. However, there are plenty of violinist who can't fiddle worth a hoot! You're a great fiddler! I'll buy any CD you produce!
