Support a New Relationship with the Muslim World
For eight years, the Muslim world had a difficult time reconciling our differences with the United States and planting seeds of friendship.
Im happy to say that I believe those troublesome days are behind us.
President Barack Obama has given Muslims in the Middle East, and our brothers and sisters everywhere, great new hope for a fruitful and lasting relationship. It is a hope we never had before he took office in January, certainly one that was unimaginable during the time of his predecessor, George W. Bush.
President Obama extended a hand to us in his inaugural speech and has steadily built on his desire for warmer relations in the months following. Just this month in Cairo, in an hour-long speech that focused on Americas relations with the Muslim world, he reminded us how much we have in common, with shared values that do more to unite us than divide us.
We in Ras Al Khaimah should do all we can to support his efforts and meet him halfway. Even in his brief time in office, he has demonstrated that he has our interests at heart, especially when it comes to Iran. In the midst of a troubling period, following Irans disputed presidential election, President Obama has not lost sight of his main goal, one that I strongly support, that Iran should abandon its effort to build nuclear weapons.
This is not an anti-Iran position. This is a pro-Muslim position. He is seeking peace and stability for the entire region. That serves to protect Muslims, rather than expose them to living in fear, caught between one nuclear-powered nation threatening another.
This new era of improving the Muslim worlds relations with America is just getting started. I believe it will continue to improve, so long as President Obama holds to his vision of peace and stability and we do all we can to be an equal partner.
