***Be sure to watch the High Quality Version***

After watching the Marina Fire on the north end of the Island, we noticed the winds were picking up, and thought we were certainly seeing steady near hurricane force winds. So before it got too dangerous, we headed back toward I-45 and ventured out to the top of the bridge that rises about 400 feet above Galveston Bay. At the beginning of the video I inserted a map to show the location.

I will note that at the beginning of the video I say the winds are 100mph. There is a good chance a few gusts were that high, however the sustained winds were more like 70mph and most gusts were around 80-85mph. Our highest recorded winds was 77.4mph (as seen in the video), however the anemometer used did not have a high sampling rate, so there were likely wind gusts much higher.

This is a low resolution version of the video. The video is shot in Standard Definition 4:3 format. For stock sales and licensing, please contact me. This video is copyright and no unauthorized use is permitted. Violations will be reported and prosecuted under the full extend of the law.

  • that can not be 100 mph cause thats day time and the worst of ike didnt hit until about 1 am

  • @IANSHELTON01

I know...I noted that in the text of the video. Be sure to read that. It wasn't far off though....again, check out the text under the video.

  • Great video!! Did you think about mount anemometer on car?

  • Actually, that is the anemometer from the "WeatherLab IV" That Chris built which is on the vehicle. The way he designed it is so that the anenometer can either be mounted on the car or hand held. At this location, we wanted to get a video of us with the anemometer, so we took it handheld. But in most cases it's on the roof mounted mobile set-up.

  • @WeatherWarriordotnet SORRY MAN dont ever read the text lol but im ianshelton01

  • @galbro48026 think again boats were tossed on to some parts of bridges beleive or not

  • as long as you guys are experts im ok with that otherwise just some random people doing it owuld be really stupid

  • Yahoo! That was a blast - slipstream blast! This was at dusk, and Ike was a large system. Winds were sustained at 75 to 80 MPH, with higher gusts.

  • the bridge was probably the safe point to be to avoid flying debris, i think if debris was a danger an individual could get seriosly hurt if accidently hit such as a tree branch

  • coool

  • what time of the day was that?

  • great video
