The Republican Party Monday opened its four-day national convention in St. Paul, in the central U.S. state of Minnesota. But as Hurricane Gustav came ashore in the American south, party leaders shortened the proceedings and urged delegates to help victims of the storm.
Thursday, delegates will nominate the party's candidate for U.S. president, Senator John McCain. But the candidate said, for now, it is time to put politics aside. VOA's Jim Fry reports from St. Paul, Minnesota.
