Guitar Chord Progressions (#1) - Engage your listeners

Hello and welcome. So this series of short video guitar lessons is going to be about chord progressions. Now everyone talks about chord progressions and moving from chord to chord. Of course I want you to be able to move from chord to chord and do it easily and do it confidently but there are a couple of things that aren't often addressed but are extremely important.

The first of which is how you connect two chords in a way that really catches your listeners and really perks up like a deer's ears. They perk up when they hear something so interesting as the way you're connecting your chords. The second thing that attracts attention is when you put mood into what you're doing, when you really approach and fill your music with an emotional quality.

First let's bring our attention to a way of connecting chords. We'll start with the simplest and then we'll get a little more complicated as we go. This first is called the walk-up and we're going to go from the bottom of the G chord to the bottom of the C chord step by step. So that's it. The technique is simple but the implications of this technique are wide which you'll find out as you keep exploring.

Now the second thing I want to bring your attention to, and again this is going to really bring to life your playing, is investing what you play with character. How do you approach the notes? For example, we can approach the notes confidently. I even missed confidently. We could approach it tentatively. I hope no one is listening. You can do it fast like you want to get it over with or you can dwell on every note like it's meaningful. A hundred and one ways you can go about doing it and those are what I want to introduce you to this round.

A few things, please. We're going to be doing videos every week so subscribe to this channel to stay in the loop about new things as they come up and as we move forward together.

Secondly, I would like you to leave a comment about what you would like to see addressed relative to learning the guitar. If you're really brave, leave a video comment with a walk-up invested with a mood; something totally unique. In that way, I can give praise and give feedback and the whole learning community can see what other people are coming up with.

Third, you can visit my website at PaulRussellMusic.com and you can learn there about private Skype lessons with me. You can also sign up to receive free MP3s of my original music which I hope you'll love and I will see you soon.

Remember, enjoy the process of learning. It's can be great, great fun.

  • Dude. I absolutely love the way that you talk. :D Zomg. Every one should study this video carefully! There's a lot of great, great information here.

  • i loled when he perked up.

  • stumbled upon this vid - was looking for "basic guitar note progressions". someone at work the other night showed what he called " g note run " and i was hoping to find it, mimic it, learn it, apply it and then be able to improvise it down the road. SO, I subscribed to your channel and will visit as often as I can. I was engaged by your presence and how you demonstrated what you were playing slowly enough for me to follow.

  • i want to know how to play sangs by ear

  • is just me that thinks he makes playing guitar sound sexy

  • really nice job, many people ask me how long i have being playing the guitar, and I tell them that its been four years, and they are like, "well I see why you play so good" However, its not how long you've being playing, but how you express your self with the guitar. I take my guitar to school Mostly everyday, and I really impress people with my playing, but all i am playing is only 3 to 4 chord progression. But you are totally right, its the way you play every chord, with confidence and beauty.

  • Thanks Paul for your selfless sharing of your talent and skills! Its one of the most wonderful gift you can share with all music lovers and enthusiasts..it makes me feel glad that it is not too late for anyone who wants to explore his/her musical inclination..and your way is awesome!!!

  • haha thankyou for the laughs im going straight to you're page, good work :]
